Kelly Stirling, Deputy principal
As Deputy Principal of St James Lutheran College, I take great pride in the school we are developing and the teaching and learning programs that are delivered here at all levels.
I came to Hervey Bay from WA, where my experience has been across a variety of schools in a variety of year levels and contexts. I began my career as a primary school teacher in a country Catholic school before moving to a Lutheran College back in my home town of Rockingham, WA. At Living Waters Lutheran College, I taught Years 6-9, co-ordinated year groups and curriculum areas as well. It was at LWLC that I was nominated for and won the “Outstanding New Educator of the Year” Award. I then returned to the Catholic sector and my “alma mater”, Kolbe Catholic College as Head of Year, Service Learning Coordinator and later, as part of the Senior Leadership Team as Head of Religious Education. During my time at Kolbe, I also completed my Masters in Religious Education.
I came to St James Lutheran College in 2014 as Deputy Principal and continue to serve my community and God in the work I have privileged to be called here to carry out. We have an amazing community here at St James and I look forward to sharing in the school’s growth and progress into the future.
genevieve clark, head of junior school
After growing up Grantham in the Lockyer Valley and attending Concordia Lutheran College and University in Toowoomba, I began teaching at Fernvale State School during the construction of the Wivenhoe Dam. After meeting and marrying a grazier, I moved to Taroom and taught in the State and then the Catholic System before moving back to The Valley. Educating our two boys in a Lutheran School, and working in a Lutheran School became a priority. In 2015 we moved to Hervey Bay.
Being a practicing Lutheran all of my life, I was excited to be offered a Year 1 teaching position at Peace Lutheran Primary School, Gatton in 1996. Sharing God’s love with children, staff and community is important to me. I always loved teaching and never thought that I would give up being a classroom teacher. God, however, had other plans for me in Gatton. I moved from being classroom teacher to Curriculum Coordinator, Deputy Principal and in 2007 I became Principal.
After 18 years at Peace and 8 years in the demanding, and fulfilling, role as Principal, it was again time for change. My family has a strong connection to Fraser Island – I have visited yearly since I was 13 – so living and working in Hervey Bay appealed to us. Working in a P-12 school context was also something that I hadn’t experienced and was keen to try. I was blessed to be appointed as Head of Junior School at St James.
This position has allowed me to continue guiding, mentoring and supporting the wonderful staff, parents and students in Lutheran Schools. The children at St James are at the heart of all decision making. We strive to prepare them for their futures. I delight in being able to support, watch and celebrate the growth and progress of children, teachers and families. The smiles and greetings of happy teachers, happy children, and happy parents brings me fulfilment. I look forward to continuing to lead the Junior School team as we seek to inspire children to learn and empower them to serve in our Christian context.
